Today I tested out a new idea – making new and editing current Wikipedia articles in order to gain backlinks and even direct traffic to your website.
Wikipedia dominates Google. You’re probably actually getting tired of seeing Wikipedia as the first result whenever you want to know something. Many of the articles on Wikipedia have high PR, like PR 6. You should take advantage of this power to promote your own websites without spamming or using blackhat or unethical methods. Not only do you get backlinks by using this method, but you also get quality direct traffic from Wikipedia readers all over the world.
How do you get started with using Wikipedia to promote a website? Here are the steps to create an article for your company:
1) Read a few featured articles.
Before you write your own article or wiki, you should read some established ones. This will give you a good feel of how articles on Wikipedia are written, giving your article a better chance of surviving the WikiMods. (Wikipedia Moderators) You should know that you can only write articles from a neutral point of view. (NPOV) You must write in third person. (Like: “Trafficke is a well-known SEO company”, and not “We are a well-known SEO company”.) Spam will not be tolerated at Wikipedia and we do not encourage it.
2) Write Your Article
This is pretty self-explanatory. Follow the Wikipedia rules and make your article at least 300 or so words. You article is called a stub. Most of the articles you see on Wikipedia are long, comprehensive, and well-written. They all start as stubs, then people edit them to become one of the articles you usually read on Wikipedia.
How to avoid spamming:
I have to emphasize that you must write from a neutral point of view. You shouldn’t have exclamation marks. (!) You may write material that can lead to conversions, but do it from a neutral point of view. Also, don’t focus on promotion. Keep your head on writing about who you are and what you do. Don’t put too many links to your website, either. One or two is fine.
3) Publish Your Article!
Just make a search on the top left of any page on Wikipedia for your company. Most likely, it won’t already be there and you will be told that you can write the article. It’s easy after that. Actually, maybe not. You have to insert markup into your article. The language is called WikiText, and get a feel for it before publishing your article. You don’t have to write markup from scratch, however, as you will be provided with a simple editor.
Now how to edit articles:
Unlike creating an article for your company or website, editing articles is easy. Just add to a current article related to your website. Add a link, but you should also add to the article. You may need to add a new section, but most of the time, this is unnecessary. Don’t expect the WikiMods to not see your addition to the article. If you do not contribute to the article in any way and just drop your link in there, there is an extremely high chance that your link will get deleted in 5 minutes. You usually do not need to use as much WikiText in order to edit an article, so this is a big plus.
Steps to edit an article:
1) Find an article to edit!
Again, pretty self-explanatory. Find an article related to your website. Don’t look for articles too specific in a niche, as they are likely to give you less powerful links. For example, a good wiki for us to edit would be “Search Engine Optimization”. It has a PR of 6 and beyond that, it attracts a lot of traffic.
2) Edit it.
Once again, it’s pretty hard to avoid spamming on Wikipedia. However, if you want to succeed with promoting your website with Wikipedia, you’ll have to do it. Otherwise, your edit will be reversed or your company’s article will be deleted within 5 minutes by the WikiMods. Remember, you have to actually add something to the article, and not just put your link in there.
In short, Wikipedia can seriously help your website succeed. You should seriously consider using these methods for both SEO and getting direct website traffic.

The conversation gets addictive. Blogging friendships and the dialogue are very rewarding and inspiring. I’ve learned so much from the folks I talk to through the comment boxes that I use.
Nice Website. You should think more about RSS Feeds as a traffic source. They bring me a nice bit of traffic.
I enjoyed reading your work! GREAT post! I looked around for this… but I found you!
Anyway, would you mind if I threw up a backlink from my site to your site?
Having a large number of one way links using step 2 takes a long time.
Good post, I can’t say that I agree with everything that was said, but very good information overall:)

Love this blog Karan! Keep it up
Back-links building will depend on the high quality of the web site or web page as people begin linking to your site when you produce top notch quality in content as well as a user friendly interface. The most valuable inbound links result from web pages that have a related content or subject as the one you have. And the ideal ones include anchor text together with your search phrases. This is the natural strategy to backlink building, however there are additional approaches to improve the quality number of backlinks as well.
Thank you for posting this. I appreciate the thought you put into it. I have tried to start a blog before and always get lost along the way. Thanks for sharing.
This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
Very interesting reading. I have one question though. Would wikipedia (the so-called wiki mods) delete your link if you didn’t add to the article content, even though your link is relevant and may be useful to readers looking for further reading about the topic? any idea, anyone?!

No, I don’t think they would. Either way, it’s pretty hard to get a backlink from Wikipedia and I can guarantee you that unless your site is dominating its niche, you won’t get in-content ones.
Thanks for the prompt reply karan. all the best

What worked for me the most is using forums.digitalpoint.com – ask in their link exchange section and you will get quite a few replies for links…it’s been amazing for me.
Thanks for the tip, Cheap Link Building Service, since apparently that’s your name!
